ESL Period 4 1/26/11

Hello Moez, and Noor,

1.) Do Now: Please watch this video once.  Then, read the questions.

http://www.history.com/videos/abolitionists-and-the-underground-railroad#abolitionists-and-the-underground-railroad

Watch the video again and answer the questions.

Answer these questions in your notebook:

1.) How did some people feel about slavery?
2.) Why was the Underground Railroad created?
3.) What risks did slaves face while traveling on the Underground Railroad?
4.) What was the result of the Underground Railroad?

Period 3 1/26/11

Hello  Moez, Juyoung, and Carlos,

I am testing again at the high school.  I have prepared some activities for you to work on.

Do Now:
1.) Watch this video clip once:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84EAbPDRQ4k&feature=fvw
Then, read the questions, and watch the video again.
Answer the questions below.

1.) Why does Ruth say, "You don't look very comfortable Mr. Lindner?"

2.) Why is Mr. Lindner's organization trying to "do something about" the colored folk moving into his neighborhood?

3.) What does Mr. Lindner mean by, "I wanted to see if we could work this THING out?" What is the "thing" he is talking about?

4.) What does Mr. Lindner say has nothing to do with the problem? Do you believe him? Why or why not?

5.) Why are negro families better off living in their own communities?

2.) Look at this character traits chart:
http://taniasanti.files.wordpress.com/2010/09/character-trait-chart.pdf

2.) Create this chart in your binder. Work on writing about Beneatha, Walter, Lena, and the business man.

3.) What adjectives can be used to describe the characters' personalities? What evidence (quotes/actions/thoughts) from the story supports those traits?
FOR EXAMPLE:   Della from "The Gift of the Magi" can be described as generous and worrisome. (a person who worries)

More adjectives: More adjectives for character traits

Examples/Evidence: Della is generous because she sacrificed her long, and beautiful hair to buy a gift for her husband.  This example showed that Della would do anything for people she loves.

She is also worrisome because she worried about a few things in the story "The Gift of the Magi". She worried about finding the perfect gift for Jim and how she was going to pay for it. She also worried about what Jim would think of her now that her hair was cut.  She said "Oh no, I look like a boy".
